On August 21, 2014, during the American Philatelic Society (APS) stamp show, the United States Postal Service issued the complete set of four "Hudson River School" stamps, each with a face value of 49 cents at the time. On the first-day cover, one stamp features Thomas Cole (1801-1848), the founder of the Hudson River School and the father of American romantic landscape painting, depicting his work Distant View of Niagara Falls (1829). In May 1829, Cole traveled to Niagara Falls to paint en plein air. By then, the area around the falls was already dotted with factories, hotels, and observation platforms, showing significant signs of tourism and industrial development. Cole deliberately removed all man-made structures, reconstructing, from a romantic perspective, an untouched primeval wilderness as a tribute to the vanishing natural landscape. The painting is now housed at the Art Institute of Chicago.

The other stamp features Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), the second-generation core figure of the Hudson River School and Cole's only formal student, with his painting Sunset (1856). The composition is dominated by the afterglow of the setting sun, with the sky layered in golden red, orange-purple, and magenta, while a faint glow appears on the horizon. The mountains and trees below appear as dark brown and dark green silhouettes, creating an extreme contrast of light and shadow, warmth and coolness. The painting is now in the collection of the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute Museum of Art in Utica, New York.

The total face value of the two stamps is 98 cents, with an additional 20-cent postage to make up the rate. The cover was canceled with the first-day of issue commemorative postmark from Hartford, Connecticut, the first-day city, and sent by airmail to China.
