On February 3, 2026, the United States Postal Service held the first-day ceremony for the 2026 Lunar New Year: Year of the Horse stamp at the Chinese Community Center in Houston, Texas. The stamp, designed by Camille Chew, features a three-dimensional horse head mask inspired by the folk masks used in Chinese Lunar New Year dragon and lion dances. Incorporating elements of traditional Chinese paper-cutting folk art, the design reinterprets classic motifs with a modern, vibrant color palette. The printing process combines offset lithography with hot foil stamping to enhance the three-dimensional texture of the mask.
The horse head is rendered primarily in pinkish-purple tones, with contrasting blue and green colors for the mane. The sides are adorned with yellow sunflowers and red tassel pendants. The face is covered with geometric paper-cut patterns, with gold foil stamping outlining the motifs to create a sculptural 3D effect.
The first-day cover, sent by a friend in the United States, uses a plain white envelope. It is affixed with two 78¢ stamps, plus an additional 14¢ in make-up postage, totaling $1.70, which met the airmail letter rate to China. The stamps were canceled with a black commemorative first-day cancel, while the make-up postage stamp bears a circular date stamp with the Houston first-day of issue postmark. The cover arrived in Shanghai, China, in May 2026.
